More about Pennsylvania

Woodlands and Farmlands

Pennsylvania’s geographical diversity supports a robust manufacturing industry, a dense population, bountiful farmlands, and mountainous wilderness areas.

In the northwest corner is the first of the state’s farming regions. Vegetables and fruits – particularly grapes – grow in the fertile land along Lake Erie.

The rest of the northern and western parts of the state lie on the forested Appalachian Plateau. Time has shaped the plateau into broad hills and deep valleys, with extensive beds of bituminous coal in the western parts.

The Allegheny National Forest protects remnants of the old-growth forests that once covered the plateau. The oldest of the living white pines is so big that six adults can barely ring it by joining hands.

Forests of maple, beech, hemlock, and mountain laurel cover the Pocono Mountains in the northeast, where waterfalls cascade down the mountainsides.

South and east of the Appalachian Plateau, a ridge called the Allegheny Front marks the beginning of the Ridge and Valley Region.

Although these valleys have good soil, they are quite different from the rich farmlands in the southeastern part of the state. There, in what is known as the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, you can savor a rural tranquillity that seems to come from another time.
